The new normal

This is a new endeavor for me. I had a blog for a short period of time a while ago, then deleted it.
I didn't think I really had anything different to say, really.

Now my kids are older

Life has changed.

And here I am.

Up until now, our Halloween mostly went like this: mom running around trying to get everyone ready, feeding something substantial to make up for the fact that candy will be the primary nutrient source for the next 4 hours. Walk to town, march in the Rag Shag parade, trick or treat and come home.

Tonight, life was different. With one in high school, one in mainstream middle school, and one in 4th grade, I found myself frantically helping the 14 year old looking for costume ideas at 4:00. Child #2, all set, not needing me. Child #3, all set, not needing me. Still, pumpkins have yet to be carved, lights have yet to be put up.

5 p.m., at the cocktail party, then over to the Rag Shag parade with just 1, bored 9 year old. The other two have gone off with friends.

Just like that, they are grown up. Checking in when necessary. Off doing their own thing.

How did this happen?

We pride ourselves on encouraging independence, individuality, confidence. But, I still want them to WANT to need me. Not necessarily to need me, but to WANT me.

We still had a good time, they still had a good time.

Not bad, not good, it was just.....different.
